What The Hills?!

Aug 8, 2021

I was very honoured and excited to be awarded the Bilby for Best Interview at this year's SA Community Broadcasters Association Awards.  It's really special when a guest opens up and shares their story, and I was lucky enough to be the one there with the microphone.

My guest for this interview was Jodie Turpin, from the Lobethal Bushfire Recovery Centre. Jodie was nominated for, and won the Westfield Local Heroes award in 2020 for her work immediately following the 2019 bushfires, and in the many months after.
While the full interview covered a great deal concerning Jodie’s voluntary work, this five minute excerpt concentrates on her experiences at the time of the fire, and the
community’s response.

The bushfires of December 2019 had an enormous impact on the local community.
By the time the interview was conducted in September 2020 recovery was well underway, but there was still a long way to go. At the same time, we were heading into the next fire season with a great deal of trepidation. Jodie’s story is just one of hundreds, about the devastation of the fires and the amazing response from the community.

Everyone in the area has lifelong memories of bushfire, whether the 2019 fires or those which have happened in the past. Jodie was able to talk about not only the amazing work she did during the recovery, but her own very close encounter with the fire. She also speaks in a very heartfelt way about her grief and guilt at surviving with her home and family intact. It’s a very emotional point when both Jodie and Kimberley are momentarily unable to continue with the interview as they contemplate the effect that fire has had on both them and their community. Thise episode had a huge amount of feedback from listeners.

“Wow that awesome, I had lots of msgs also when I shared the last link. It was a very touching interview, I had emotions come out for the first time since that devastating day. It means a lot that you took the time out to want to hear my story and experiences during the devastating fires.”

“If you can get me to listen to every word on a chat show..... I don’t normally stay in the zone when it comes to blah blah blah, but you and your guests are so interesting, you have my full attention. Loving it! But you made me cry so much. I just finished putting my eye liner on too and now have to start again!”
